Ethiopia has the first newspaper for the blind and visually impaired

A young journalist from Ethiopia developed the country's first newspaper, the texts of which will be written in braille. The first circulation of the newspaper has already been printed and distributed to interested parties. It is reported by BBC Amharic. Fiyori Tewolde worked for the state newspaper Addis Zemen before she decided to create a newspaper for blind readers. Nearly four million Ethiopians have visual impairments, and I noticed that they do not have access to information - and they miss things like vacancy announcements that are published in the print media, Fiyori told a BBC correspondent. Her innovative newspaper, called Fetil (which means thread in Amharic), will be published every Wednesday and will cover social, economic and political issues. Journalists write articles for the newspaper on a voluntary basis. The journalist also said that the newspaper will include special reports on the problems faced by people with disabilities in Ethiopia. Copies of the first edition of the Fetil newspaper were handed over to the Ethiopian National Association of the Blind, government agencies and other organizations. We want Fetili to be found on registration tables among other newspapers and magazines, Fiyori said. She added that the feedback has so far been very positive, and people praised the new publication. The newspaper will also be sold on the streets of the country's capital, Addis Ababa, for 30 byr ($0.82). The high cost is due to the need to use special paper. Fiyori hopes to receive support from various charities to subsidize expenses and plans to distribute newspapers to blind people for free.
