The amount of garbage in the business capital of Tanzania is increasing - expert

Tanzania's business capital, Dar es Salaam, is facing an increase in various types of waste. This was reported by the newspaper Mtanzania with reference to the statement of the head of the National Council for Environmental Protection Samveli Gwamaki. Speaking at a conference on resolving the problems of garbage removal, processing and storage in Dar es Salaam, Gwamaki emphasized that the reason for the increase in the amount of waste in the city is the development of industry and population growth. He noted that medical waste, such as face masks, gloves and cellophane bags, had increased significantly during the pandemic period. The Environmental Protection Council estimates that the amount of debris in Dar es Salaam will approach 12,000 tons by 2025. We met here to discuss various difficulties in managing garbage collection at various facilities, such as hospitals, residential buildings, and numerous institutions. First of all, the problem of a sharp increase in the amount of waste is caused by population growth, Gwamaka said. He stressed that, in view of the above, it was necessary to establish a sustainable system of garbage collection, disposal and storage, as well as to improve the relevant infrastructure. Gwamaka called on the population to sort household waste, saying that in this way it is not just garbage, but opportunities. He added that through the processing of garbage, the import of imported raw materials may significantly decrease. Gwamaka emphasized the need to educate the population about separate garbage collection.
