Asphalt roads reach all counties of Chinese Tibet
Asphalt roads were drawn to all counties of the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China, Xinhua News Agency reported on September 1. According to the regional department of transport, paved roads were carried out up to 86.4% of the villages and 61.4% of the administrative villages of Tibet. Currently, 38.2 thousand km of rural highways have been repaired and 86 thousand km of rural highways have been opened for traffic. Tibet has vast areas of land, a harsh natural environment and extremely poor transport conditions for historical reasons. At the end of 2015, there were no roads to two villages and 230 administrative villages in Tibet. According to the director of the Tibet Department of Transport, Xu Wenqiang, the region has been increasing the construction of roads and transport infrastructure in rural areas over the past five years. The passenger transport network has also been improved. Now buses run to 74 counties, 476 villages and 2050 administrative villages. Today, 547,000 people are employed in the construction of highways. According to Tashi Norbu, who works in the rural highway department of the regional transport administration, the incomes of farmers and pastoralists increased ddue to the development of the region's transport infrastructure by 13.72 billion yuan (about $2 billion).
