South Korea urged to abandon fishing in the Gulf of Guinea
In South Korea, they called on shipowners and seafarers to abandon fishing in the waters of West Africa due to the growing activity of pirates in the region. It is reported by KBS with reference to representatives of the South Korean Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. According to them, 46 vessels are currently fishing in the Gulf of Guinea, on which 145 South Korean citizens are located. South Korean authorities also called the Gulf of Guinea the territory with the highest risk of pirate attack and recommended stopping any activity in the region from August 3. It is known that the number of pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea is growing every year. In 2017 there were 65 attacks in the region, in 2018 there were 78 attacks, in 2019 there were 121 attacks. It is noted that in May 2020, a South Korean citizen was abducted during a pirate attack, five more people were abducted in June.
