US imposes new sanctions against Syria and its president
New US sanctions imposed on Syria will affect President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma. This was announced on June 17 by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, reports Arab News. Pompeo noted the entry into force of the sanctions provisions of the law on the protection of civilians in Syria, known as the Caesar Law. He stressed that now sanctions threaten everyone who has affairs with the Assad regime, regardless of location. Restrictions apply to travel and finance. They extend, in particular, to the Syrian leader and his wife, but will not affect the provision of humanitarian assistance to Syrians. The American Caesar Syria Civil Protection Act imposes sanctions not only against the Syrian government and army, but also against any countries that help the official authorities of this country.
